Supporting Frontline workers to keep up on their credentials passively
In January 2020, the founder of a technology and media startup company recruited me to design wireframes for their flagship communication platform, Landing Trails. The wireframes led to end-state prototypes built in Adobe XD for commercial demonstrations. I presented the concept to Dr. Rob Gore, a leading emergency physician at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Rob Gore saw an immediate opportunity to leverage the platform to support frontline emergency service workers in completing their annual continuing education certifications (CMEs and CEUs).

The Problem
How Might We revamp the credential education system to better fit the stressful lives of emergency frontline workers?

Grueling Schedules

Frontline workers, (e.g. police, EMS, firefighters, nurses, emergency physicians, etc.) deal with high-intensity environments, long work hours, and physically demanding jobs.
Overwhelming Stress

Their roles exact heavy burdens, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic where frontline emergency workers are experiencing routine trauma and compassion fatigue.
Boring Education

On top of a difficult role, frontline workers need to keep up with required credentials on their own time through disconnected, boring, and outdated education experiences.

Iterations – Repurposed Design
Initially, I was tasked to design the platform to support communication and storytelling for a diverse number of organizations. After interviewing Dr. Rob Gore, my team recognized the platform's features and functions could be redesigned to better suit the needs of educating frontline heroes.

Rosetta web @ Porsche N.A.
Organize the multifaceted content to showcase the interconnected topics around trauma.
The “Rosetta Web” helped organize Porche’s data strategy content.

Content @ gov Representatives
The platform curates publicly accessible content based on the information needed for users to passively study for their credentials.
Curated relatable content to better engage the audience that’s consuming it.

Milestones @ Walmart
Monitor what credential questions users could answer depending on the content information they had consumed.
Keep track of timely changes in the startup landscape and recalls associated with their bundled products.
New Branding – Exciting the locals
The look and feel of the platform needed to be different from classic certification experiences. Dr. Rob Gore’s team at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY would be piloting the platform, so we decided to embody an exciting Brooklyn-inspired brand.

Designing the Icon
Dr. Rob Gore and his ER colleagues supported the 2020 protests in Brooklyn by bringing supplies to the crowds and identifying themselves as supporting physicians with these orange crosses.

The Solution:
A passive“Edutainment” Platform
Home page & Rosetta Web
It is important to see the bigger picture when studying for anything; the Rosetta web organizes content in a way that showcases how trauma is interconnected to various topics like respiratory, stress disorders, and housing.

Publicly Sourced & interest based Content
The platform curates publicly accessible trauma-related content that comes in the form of articles, videos, and podcasts. It curates this content based on the information embedded in it so that as users consume said content they are also passively studying for their credentials.

Credential Assessment
Data utilization of platform engagement monitors how much time the user dedicates to a particular piece of content, the platform keeps track of what credential information users know based on the content they’re consuming. This tracking unlocks bite-sized credential questions for users to answer as they consume more content.
