A game that supports family discussions around health insurance
While studying at Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2016 I was a part of an experimental design-thinking course that collaborated with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. It started as a student project and grew to influence the way the company approached innovation. Through the project we introduced strategic thinking, the voice of the customer, prototyping, and testing to the culture of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, which went on to influence other work for years.

Before people are 26 years old they may have parents to rely on for health insurance.
After you turn 26 they are required to navigate a very complicated system for themselves.
How might we introduce applicable experiences to people so that they can approach health insurance with confidence?
The Process – User Testing
Throughout the two-year process at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, we relied heavily on testing our concepts with users and team members for quick feedback and to make informed decisions.
Abstracting Health Insurance Through Play
To help create conversations and experience with health insurance we created an abstracted game. The game passively introduced complex insurance topics through fun themed analogies.
The Process – Iterations & Refinement
The game naturally evolved overtime. It started as a memorization-based board game, then veered into a humorous card game, and finally an abstracted story-based outer space game.

Nova became a space-themed abstraction of health insurance. The game allows for players of all ages to passively gain experience with health insurance, prompting conversations about the complicated components of health insurance through gameplay.
